Linux
'my name is Linus Torvalds ' 'and I pronounce Linux Linux' -Linus Torvalds
One of the projects of ASCII is "using Linux". Linux is an operating system made under the GNU public license.
This means that using Linux is free and your even allowed to make
changes in software and redistribute it. Linux is the joint effort of
people around the world, writing softwarefor their own use and
distributing it to other people. Also, new companies have started
selling pre-packaged linux, making money on service instead of software.
ASCII uses Linux because we want to provide an alternative for Windoze
which is free for all and ajustable to your own taste. Information
cannot be free if the software you need to see it isn't!
Not so long ago, Linux was a hacker's thing, not usable for "normal"
users. This is changing quickly: Linux is becoming user-friendly and a
lot of beautiful applications are coming out each day. Linux is
available for free on the internet, and you can also buy in on CD very
cheaply.
In ASCII, we use Linux on our internet machines. For most users, the
difference between the Linux graphical environment and a Windoze
machine are so small that they don't even notice. More experienced
Windoze users will find differences which might annoy them at first,
but might later be recognized as the power of Linux.
