Wireless
ASCII is involved in several wireless projects, both locally (in Amsterdam) and more internationally.
Some people from ASCII started http://www.amsterdam-wireless.nl a website with the aim of founding a community wireless network in Amsterdam. With the subsidie for "Draadloos Oost", a side project of Amsterdam-Wireless, this finally seems to work out. Unlike several other sities, a city-wide wireless network did not exist yet in Amsterdam, allthough several smaller initiatives are active.
ASCII also applies her knowledge in several urgent realtime solutions. We supply "internet on strange places" whenever it's needed. An example for this would be the Noborder Camp in Strasbourg and the Bulderbos Camp on the new landingstrip of Schiphol Airport. A running project (since sept. 2003) is a 7 kilometer wireless link to the ADM, a squat outside the city where ADSL is not available).
Over the last three years, ASCII volunteers learned a lot about wireless, possible applications and tricks for easy use. We build our own antenna's, have equipment and knowledge to measure long distance links and can give advise for most problems involving the 802.11 standard. We share our knowledge in workshops, ranging from workshops for beginners till antenna building workshops and open discussions about routing problems in wireless community networks.
